What are the symptoms of a TBI?

If you recently suffered an injury to your head, you could have a TBI. One of the most common injuries that occur when due to blunt force or penetrating trauma to the head is a traumatic brain injury or TBI.

According to the CDC, a range of symptoms may change after the initial injury and during recovery. The following include the different symptoms of a TBI.

Symptoms of a Mild TBI

When you suffer from a TBI, the symptoms may seem similar to other conditions. You may have difficulty recognizing that you have a problem and may need to rely on the opinion of others. Some of the common symptoms include:

  • Dizziness
  • Lack of energy
  • Nausea
  • Vision problem

It is also common to lack focus or concentration. Many patients have trouble with short-term memory and feeling groggy.

Symptoms of a Severe TBI

If you have a headache after an accident and it will not fade over time but instead becomes worse, you may need medical attention right away. A serious brain injury may result in feeling weak or feelings of numbness. You may lack coordination, balance and feel confused easily. In severe cases, you may experience seizures and convulsions.

Other symptoms include:

  • Inability to recognize people
  • Restlessness
  • Vomiting
  • One pupil larger than the other
  • Drowsiness or an inability to stay conscious

Rare cases may include blood clots that crowd the brain.

When it comes to TBIs, you may not be able to identify whether you have a mild or serious TBI. Symptoms vary from person to person. Some may have severe symptoms, whereas others with serious injuries may have few.
