The Benefits Of Uninsured And Underinsured Motorist Coverage

One of the best pieces of advice we give our clients is to check their automobile insurance policy to make sure that they have adequate Uninsured Motorist Coverage and Underinsured Motorist Coverage. This coverage will protect you and your family if you’re injured in a collision caused by another driver with no auto insurance or poor auto insurance.
Indiana drivers are only required to carry liability insurance of $25,000.00 per person, and many Indiana drivers carry this “minimum coverage” amount. In fact, many Indiana drivers carry no auto insurance at all. If you’re seriously injured by a driver with no auto insurance or only “minimum coverage”, it will be important that you have another way to be compensated for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. This is where Uninsured Motorist Coverage and Underinsured Motorist Coverage can help you.
These coverages are usually issued together, and may appear on your insurance card as “UM/UIM.” If the driver who caused your injuries has no insurance, you can be paid by your insurance company under your Uninsured Motorist Coverage up to the limits of your policy. If the driver has Indiana’s “minimum coverage” of $25,000.00, but your case is worth more than that, then the other driver’s insurance company would pay the first $25,000.00 of your settlement, and you could be paid under your Underinsured Motorist Coverage up to the limits of your policy (less the $25,000.00 you received from the at-fault party’s insurer). You should purchase as much Uninsured Motorist Coverage and Underinsured Motorist Coverage as you can reasonably afford to protect yourself and your family.
Many victims of a car accident do not realize that their own automobile insurance policy may have Uninsured or Underinsured coverage to help pay their medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
